Flagyl side effects

Like all medicines, Metronidazole may cause side effects, although they do not occur in all patients using it.

Some diseases and other conditions may contraindicate the use of Flagyl or indication for dosage adjustment. In some situations it may be necessary to carry out specific examinations.

Use caution if the product is used in people:
· With active central nervous system disease;
· With severe hepatic impairment or hepatic encephalopathy;
· Treated with corticosteroids and prone to edema (preparation contains large amounts of sodium);
· Abnormal composition of the blood.
If you present in any of the above conditions before using the product, consult your physician.
If you experience neurological disorders during treatment (such as numbness or tingling in the limbs, convulsions), consult your doctor and your doctor will decide whether you can continue to use Flagyl.

Patients re-using Flagyl, who before or after treatment with Flagyl have significant abnormalities in blood count, should be kept under medical observation.
During the treatment your doctor should usually make monitoring of the blood condition. If the treatment lasts longer than 10 days control is absolutely necessary.
During treatment with may occur yeast infection (candidiasis) in the mouth, digestive tract and vagina. In this case, it is necessary to consult with your doctor for appropriate treatment.
Metronidazole may affect the results of certain laboratory tests (eg, liver enzymes AST).
There are no data on the effects on ability to drive and use machines / equipment.

The list of diagnoses when the drug is not indicated:
Hypersensitivity, leukopenia (including history), organic CNS (including epilepsy), hepatic failure (in the case of high doses), pregnancy (I trimester), lactation. Pregnancy (II-III trimester), renal / hepatic failure, respiratory Tract Infections, Endocarditis.

Note that the expected benefits of the medicine are usually larger than the damage resulting from side effects. The most frequently occurring side effects include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia, metallic taste in the mouth. Also may occur dry mouth, inflammation of the lining of the mouth, inflammation of the pancreas (which disappeared after discontinuation of the drug), abnormal liver function, cholestatic hepatitis and jaundice (resolved upon discontinuation of the preparation), muscle and joint pain, dark urine (does not affected health), yeast infection (Candida). There may be hematological disorders (decrease in white blood cells, neutrophils, thrombocytopenia and rarely agranulocytosis), nervous system disorders such as headache, dizziness, peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling, paresthesia), confusion, nervousness, depression, sleep disorder (sleepiness , insomnia), fainting, seizures, encephalopathy, subacute cerebellar syndrome (eg, ataxia, dysarthria, impaired walking, nystagmus, tremor, loss of coordination), blurred vision (double vision, myopia), tinnitus, hearing loss, and mental health problems, including hallucinations and anorexia. You can change the skin, rash, pruritus, hypersensitivity reactions (urticaria, pruritus, angioedema, erythema multiforme, anaphylaxis). There may be a thrombophlebitis.

Please Note! During treatment you should not drink alcohol. Metronidazole intensifies the toxic effects of alcohol. Alcohol consumption during treatment may cause adverse reactions, such as the feeling of hot, sweating, headache, nausea, vomiting, pain in the upper abdomen. For effective and safe treatment,  follow your doctor’s instructions. Familiarize yourself with the characteristics of the drug described in this article before use it. Before you take you should check the expiration date indicated on the packaging (label). Do not use the drug after expiry date. Store the medication in a tightly closed container, out of the reach and sight of children, in accordance with the requirements of the manufacturer.
