Flomax (generic name: tamsulosin) was created to help men with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH or enlarged prostate). However, there are some off label uses for this medication.
Below the bladder there is prostate gland. It is part of the male genitourinary system. The urethra (the channel on which the urine goes through) goes inside the prostate. That’s why Flomax or tamsulosin is very frequently used for relax the ureter in renal patients by helping kidney stones pass the ureter more easily with less damage.
In addition, recently presented studies of the American Urological Assocation revealed a lack of benefit to using tamsulosin to help stone passage. But less pain, urinary urgency and frequency were noticed when alpha blockers were used. Even women with urinary retention and multiple sclerosis patients can benefit from tamsulosin when they have urinary difficulties.
